Do These RF/EMI Filters Have Any Merit ?

I'm thinking about sticking one of these filters in my power amp:

Sorry about the long link.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone knows a little something about whether or not they're any good.

I'm trying to get rid of the last little bit of RF that I'm getting (it's a local Italian radio station), and also whenever anyone turns on a light in the house, I hear it through the speakers. The house I'm in at the moment is pretty old....built in 1956 I think, so I don't think the wiring would be too crash hot.

The house I used to live in a few years back didn't have this problem....at least I can't remember it.

Any help as always is much appreciated.

I have one of these types of IEC sockets lying around, but I wasn't sure if I could safely use it with a tube amp. I would like to know about this, too.

I see no reason why you couldn't use one of those on a tube amplifier, or anything for that matter. Most computer monitors have them, they have tubes! So if you on the scrounge there's a sure-fire source.

Thing is, it says they're designed to reduce line to ground noise, so that may not fix all problems. Also, they're highly unlikely to fix problems with poor wiring such as you have described, Incubus. The thump you hear when someone switches on/off a light is hardly considered to be RF, so it won't be rejected by the filter.

BTW, Incubus, you can "disguise" the long links by using some fancy formatting. Just thought I'd mention it because the long line length is making me scroll horizontally to read this thread!  :|

Here's what I typed;
