you need a bipolar adapter, if I recall....  Like +/- 15 or 18v.

If you want to use 9v batteries, hook up two batteries:  the hot of one and the cold of the other connect together to become neutral, and the leftover hot and cold will give you + and - 9v with respect to neutral (ground)

Otherwise, you can use a 15 or 18vdc adapter and build a small circuit to get a bipolar supply out of it (a couple of caps and a couple of resistors, if I recall....)
