Awesome sounding Diode/Cap combo!

I started messing around with clipping diodes in parallel on Saturday, and tried out using an LED, a Silicon 1n4001 diode, a Ge diode, and this dark yellow/ tan diode with the number 221 (could someone help me identify it? I can show you a picture of it if you want.). Anyways, the results weren't that good. They were all in parallel. They doubled distortion and decreased output. I took them all out and tried different combos the next day. I found a combo that sounbs really, really, REALLY good. Almost too good... (If that's possible! heh) hmmm... Anyways, this combo is composed of a 1-watt 1IN4733A Zener diode, an Epoxy rectifier diode, and a Silicon 1n4001, with a .047uF polyester film cap that adds more bass and rounds the highs. The 3 Diodes and the cap are all in parallel. I'll get a soundclip as soon as I can. Output and power have been incresed, and it is much more transparent. Individual notes shine through very good now.

Note: I've had Keeley's mod and Indyguitarist's mod done to my MT-2

But anyway, just try it out! You won't regret it. It's that great. I never used to use my single coils, but now I do... it's just so great.

After some more messing around, I've discovered that my MT-2 is now awesome for really smooth, sweet overdrive. I guess the level works by putting more power through the diodes since when I turn it up, it also overdrives it! I can actually 'push' my MT-2 into that said smooth overdrive with my DOD 7-band EQ pedal. I just have to move the level slider up a little bit. Also: Get an EQ pedal if you don't have one. They're awesome.

hello rjm, would you please kindly post the keeley mod mt2 schematic ? also original mt2 schematic, i got one but no part numbers........ thanks a lot

Go to Boss and the schematic is there. I don't have the Keeley mod schematic though. I sent my pedal in for him to do. I did do indyguitarist's mod myself though. Indyguitarist's mod is more of an audible difference than Keeley's mod. Keeley's mod just makes it much quieter, more transparent, and single notes are cleaner, but the pedal still has as much distortion. Do the mod I did, which I explained above at the beginning of this topic. Indyguitarist's mod makes the mids sound EXCELLENT and it also trims the highs off a little bit. My mod gives a super smooth distortion. When I turn up the level knob on my MT-2 now, it actually overdrives my diodes, so when I can have my distortion really low but have the level high and I get a really, REALLY nice smooth, high gain sound. I also use a DOD EQ pedal. EQ pedals really fatten your tone.

Thanks for the plug! :)

No prob., I always like to talk about stuff I like! Thanks for diy kits!

Also, just as a reference for other people, a .047uF around the diodes is probably too big for just rounding off the highs. I'm going to try a much smaller value for that. The epoxy rectifier diode might be a little too much also; as it seems to add noise.

hope that helps!
which part of sin theta plus index times sin theta times ratio do you need me to clarify to you?

RjM, any idea which epoxy rectifier diode you used? What specs for it, etc? Thanks.

Could you specify in which direction the diodes are pointing?
