I built something pretty similar to this to use as a bass distortion. Mine has a Swollen Pickle tone control on the output (modded Big Muff tone control). I've had favourable comments from my bandmates and other bass players. I used 2N5457 fets.

Is that the schematic of the "Triode Emulator" mentioned in the diyAudio thread, or is it just something similar?

That's an amazing circuit-it manages to output the guitar with no input!  

I will breadboard it soon...  Is that a 10uf nonpolarized?  A 300 ohm pot?  Wow, I am going to have to do some sourcing beforehand.

Of course it is not the triode emulator.

Its is just a sample of the theory exposed.

I took the idea and tried a direct aplication.

I have simulated  it with CIRCUITMAKER (student spice).
This can help a lot.

The sound was good enough and i considered sharing.

Do not mind about
caps type, it is the simple type eletrolitic.

Just make some experiment with source resistor.


Obs the triode emulator is too much more complex.

Try contact DIMITRI . (google -> dimitri+triode emulator) . He is a gentle guy and smart either.
