Hi there,

I am looking for a ring mod that has an expression pedal.  I have looked at the Snarling Dogs' Mold Spore, but has bad reviews so I'm not sure... I was then looking at the Electro Harmonix Frenquency Analyzer, which looks pretty decent, but has no expression pedal option.  Is it possible to mod that pedal to have an expression pedal (to sweep frequencies)?  If not, is there a really good and reliable either DIY ring mod or a retail one that has an expression pedal option?  Or else, is there a way to make the mold spore more reliable?

Thanks for any help you can provide, I will appreciate it.

Any Ring Mod that uses a single pot to control the fequency can be modified to use a pedal in place of the pot. If the pot is wired as a variable resistor simply rewire one of the connections through a switched mono jack. When nothing is plugged into the jack the frequency pot will operate as normal, when an expression pedal, with the same pot value is plugged into the jack the pedal will now control the frequency.

If the frequency pot is wired as a voltage divider (all three terminals are used) you'll need a switched stereo jack wired to two of the terminals on the pot and an expression pedal wired the same way, connected to the jack with a stereo cord.

If you haven't already, check out the Ring Modulator in the Craig Anderton book Electronic Projects for Musicians. It's also available as kit from PAiA (you'll need the book for the schematic).

Thanks for info!

Now... on the thread you gave me, it says that if the pot value is not the same as the expression pedal's pot value, I would need to mod the pot in the expression pedal as well.  Is this easy to do?  Do I just change the pot inside the expression pedal?  Is there some pots for that at smallbear?

The Frostwave Blue Ringer has a control voltage input that allows you to control the frequency of the local oscillator by an external voltage source.

You can easily make a control voltage pedal, by just running a 9v battery into the input of a pot type rocker volume pedal, then as you rock it the wiper picks off the voltage & there you are!

Also, you can run an audio signal into the CV, to frequency modulate the local oscillator, which gives a more complex result when using the ring moodulator.

Having said all that, I encourage you to DIY, of course!

Moding a Frequency Analyzer to add a control pedal is really easy. You just will have to have a pot in the expression pedal that's the same as the FA one, I think it's 100K lin, it won't be hard to find !!
