MT-2 Volume Problem

Despite my lead singer/rhythm guitarist's jeering comments, I use a slightly modified Metal-Zone for my heavier sound/leads.  I like how it sounds and it works very well with our band's overall sound (Our singer even admits it doesn't sound like he would expect it too).  I have one big problem though.  It's too loud.

In order to have the thing volume match my clean and dirty channels on my amp, I have to turn the volume knob to nearly zero.  The real problem with setting it this way is that I don't get enough gain/distortion for both lead and rhythm without the rhythm sound being too loud.  With the volume knob on the mt-2 down so far, as soon as I back the volume on my guitar down for rhythm parts, it cleans up too much and I'm left with a muddy semi-clean,no sustain sound.

I'm entertaining several ideas:

1. Find/build a good replacement for the MT-2 that does the following:  Good sustain and distortion for leads AND stays really dirty when the guitar vol knob is dialed back a bit.

2.  Add some extra resistance to the MT-2's output, set it for my rhythm volume/crunch and build a booster to use when I need a little more for leads.

3. Looking for suggestions for this inventive bunch of people.

You could stick a voltage divider on the output to limit the maximum output...
