Different value of drive pot for more control?

Today on my second attempt I managed to build this Rat clone http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/diagrams/rodentsc.gif without getting a  ton of whiney oscillation and feedback from it :D
The only problem I have with it is that almost everything with past 20% drive is just a boatload of slightly fuzzy distortion, I'd like to have some more control over that lower settings (so that everything that is now up 0%-20% would be like 0% - 50%) Would using a bigger value help this? Or a different kind of potentiometer?

Also...would the same thing work on the 1k pot for fuzz in a fuzz face?

First confirm that you did use a log pot. What you're describing sound exactly like what you would get if you used a linear pot.

Other options: Use a bigger value pot with a parallel resistor to get the total resistance down to about 100k (e.g. 500k pot with 120k resistor);

Replace the 100k pot with a smaller pot (50k or 25k). This will give you more control in the lower distortion range but you will never get the higher range.
