Transformators, Deluxe Electric Mistress

Just wondering if AC powered effects are noiser.. I mean placing that transformator in the same house... Wouldnt i hear that 50/60Hz hum? On the other side, i'm sure that this works.. EH effekts and many equipment..
Are there any general guidelines, rules how and where to place it, how to wire it? (I want to build a Deluxe Electric Mistress.)
