Dave Gilmour's Tone

Hey i was just wondering if anyone here knows what pedals Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd uses. I've been learning the solo to Comfortably Numb but it just doesn't sound right so i've decided to build some of Dave's effects but the only problem is i don't know any of the pedals he used. Can anyone help?

For the Comfortably Numb solo he probably used a Strat with the bridge pup through a Big Muff then an overdriven amp.  That was for the second solo.  The first solo is probably just compression and overdriven amp.

I know for sure that he uses the Big Muff and a Univibe but Im mainly concerned with finding what he uses on the first COmforatbly Numb solo, i just love that sound. I think the first solo is a little more than a compressor and an overdriven amp though. I think he might be using an octave pedal as well. Oh and if you're looking for a really good site for finding artist setups, go to: www.guitargeek.com . My only problem was they didn't have gilmour. Fantastic site otherwise.

on CN, Dave used a Big muff and an Electric mistress. I don't remember what he said he used for a delay, but about that time he was using an MXR Digital Delay rack.

Also has lots of good backing tracks to play along to.


You can get a decent gilmour sound with a program called native instruments guitar rig, under "godmour" , change the chorus mode to flanger, turn up distortion, and instant "The Wall" sound!


I forgot to add, to get the sound for the "Comfortably Numb" solo(s) with pedals you need setup in this order:

Guitar (bridge pickup),> MXR Dynacomp,> EH Big Muff,> Boss Ge-7 Equalizer, >  EH Electric Mistress, > Boss DD3, > Guitar amp

I have all of the above except the electric mistress and boss dd3 which i will be getting soon, Its also worth noting mr D.G uses active battery powered EMG pickups, but before he used these he used an Orange Treble & Bass booster.

i thought he used the middle strat pickup by it self for that Confortably numb tone? didn't he?

I always get closer to that tone with the middle strat pup. :wink:

I'm also working on Comfy Numb's solos. I have the "David Gilmour In Concert" DVD (2002), which contains some "DVD extras" close-up footage of his fretboard work. He's playing an old Gretsch in this concert and I really like his tone here.

I ripped and edited the footage into segments and put them up on my site. Sometime soon, I'll make a proper page with links. For now, you can click these links to download direct. There will be many more to follow.

They are DVD resolution and maybe a bit large for dial-up users. These are encoded with the Divx 6 codec. It's a free download:

At the moment, there are issues with OSX 10.4 and Divx, so don't bother getting these if you don't have VPC or a Windows machine. If there's a demand for Mac compatibility, I'll upload QT versions. Let me know.

On the resent live "reunion" appearance, he used the middle pickup (as I had suspected from my own middle pickup experiments) for CN.

It is worth noting that Mr. Gilmour picks closer to the neck (as do Leslie West and other tone kings) than is usual and that with the middle pickup produces a nice sound.  Also, using lots of mid's with it produces a big humbuckerish sound.

And I always thought the Comfortable Numb solo was done with the guitar direct into the PA/whatever? skipping the amp part. Or at least 1 Pink Floyd song was like that.


As far as a gilmour tones: the best I can get is is a fuzzface with everything 100% and a lot of delay. Its as good as I can get for the solos of Dark Side of the Moon (I think it'd sound better if I had a strat though )
