Which inductor to get?

Hi folks,

I recently modded my gcb95 to true bypass and did the selectable cap and q mod. It sounds better but somehow still does not seem 'vommitee' enough. Also, it still has abit of that shrill high end. I'm thinking of changing the inductor to get it more vommitee. I like the hendrix type sound but wouldnt mind if it were versatile also. I searched the forum but couldnt get a complete picture of the different inductors.

Do any of them sound like the stock one? Stick with the stock one? Should I get the expensive halo and be done with it? Get red and yellow swtich them using a toggle? Get a combination of halo+red or halo+yellow? Stock inductor plus either red/yellow/halo?

I'm sure you folks have experimented alot. Which inductor would you guys recommend? Sorry i gotto ask so many question but I'm not able to try them all as wah parts are very rare here. Have to ship them in so need to make an educated decision.

Thanks!

You want vomit? Get one of those old TDK inductors and pop it in there. That's the vomiting one Guitar Player was referring to when they did their stompbox shootout somewhere around 1994-95.

I believe this was discussed here.

But the transistors also play a part in your tone as well.

I wouldnt mind, but i dont think they are readily available. May be expensive too if they were rare.

Which current production inductors will do the same job?

Mobisimo

I found that swapping out the stock .22uF caps for polyprop ones helped a lot in reducing the shrill high end.
When I did some wah mods, I ordered a halo from Stuart Castledine.  Seemed like a quality one.  I was working on a Vox v847, so pretty much any mod you do to that pedal is gonna make it sound better.

Odd you should mention that, Paul. Within a week or so after I became interested in this hobby, I found that very issue. Probably saved it for the lesson section with Clapton it has, but there they were. All those boxes reviewed. Gotta love synchronicity.
Little time to do it right. Always time to do it over.

What a trip.  :icon_wink:

Yeah, Synchronicity was a great album...

Ok. I think i'll get the red and yellow and switch them with a toggle. If I still dont like it, i'll buy the halo. If it doesnt work, I'll quit playing guitar!!

Btw, which aspect of an inductor makes it sound good? Is it the 500 mh that makes a wah sound good? Is the stock inductor more than 500 mh that thats why they dont sound good?

Thanks for the info everyone.

P.s. I think some of these threads should be made into an sticky FAQ.

That 500mH number is based on the inductors found in the original Vox Clyde McCoy wah pedals. The ones that measured close to 500mH are considered to be the best sounding ones. There is more to it than just the inductor, though. In this case, I do consider the "tropical fish" caps to be a part of the equation in the overall sound of the Clyde McCoy. Anyhow, the new ones measure around 660mH, and some feel that it "makes the bass too muddy". The bottom line is that once you try all these things, you can decide what you like. Don't be dragged into the "I have to have a Clyde McCoy wah or it won't sound good" - go with what your ears like! (Ignore all of this if you already know these things...  :icon_wink:)
