How would I go about building a volume "choke" for my FX loop

I need a volume boost for leads but it has to work with line-level, so running an op-amp or other similar design with a battery would lack some headroom. So I thought about simply reducing the volume for rhythm!

Can I just put a resistor (well a pot wired as a variable resistor) between the input and the output and leave the ground alone? The voltage drop accross the resistor would lower the volume right?

Or do I have to wire the pot as a resistance to ground and take the signal from the wiper (like some pedals output pot works)?

That would be simple to do. Just get a box, a DPDT switch, a 1M pot and a pair of jacks. Wire it so one mode is straight thru and the other mode going thru the volume pot. It'll work, but I can't guarantee it's performance in terms of you liking it or not...

Yup.

Build the FX loop volume box but do what Paul said and put a switch in there so you can switch it on/off.  The schematic for it is on my site (see signature).  Just wire it up to a DPDT switch like you would any other circuit.

Thanks for the help

Actually I'll make the thing remote-switched using a relay and a footswitch, I'll make it turn on the amp's reverb at the same time!

That's a nifty idea.  :icon_cool:
