alright i have a few questions

http://www.robertkeeley.com/audio6l6/dstech.html

1. i'm gonna do these mods to my DS-1 these are the "keeley mods" but i dont see any mention of where you install the switch to go between the Seeing Eye Mod and the Ultra Mod where are you supposed to put it?

2. also this is part of the mod instructions:
R39 20K    R14 1.5K    R35 2.4K if you change the power LED to a 5mm Yellow LED

i thought i remember hearing something about if you want to change the color of an LED that you must change the resistor values before it......say i want to use either a Blue or Green LED....do i have to change the values of these 3 reisistors?

3. http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=334

these LEDs will work right?

The switch goes here:

http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=10

It's only R35 you change for the LED. It limits current draw ( for a longer lasting battery ) and keeps the LED in it's safe operating range  ... To be accurate about the value you need to know the Source Voltage, Forward Voltage and Forward Current of the LED you're using ...

You can use this calculator:

http://www.muzique.com/schem/led.htm

Or you can wing it as I do ... I usually use a value between 1.5K and 4.7K depending on how bright I want it as I never use batteries ... I could be wrong, but haven't had any issues yet :) ( anyone have any comments about this ?)

The 5mm LED will work but It's much easier to use a 3mm as you don't have to drill a new whole... Smallbear has some here: http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=337

the yellow will look cool!

Good luck with it. I'm not that fond of the mod and came up with my own after doing it ;)

You might want to try this excellent mod or at least listen to the clips, really good.

Yup, My mod ....

Thanks for posting that, glad you liked it!  ... I like the fact that I didn't have to toot my own horn :)

Screaming Solo

wow those clips really sound great

Screaming Solo

alright i see where the switch goes....but where would i wire it up along with the schematic?

would it sound bad if i just ommitted the switch and still did the SEM and Ultra mod together

That what I'd do ... just ommit the switch and the extra LED ... It only adds more gain, you don't need it ;)

Screaming Solo

alright sounds good

what differences do you have with your schematic and the one from keely

i really love the vai's solo tone thats why i'd love to do keeleys mods to my DS1 but i dont see where i'd install a toggle switch to switch between the two modes

arrrrgh this is confusing  ???

In the DS-Ultra mod we change C11 to a 0.047uF metal film or better and lower R13 to 2.4Kohm. As well as changing C3 and C13 to 0.1Uf metal film or better.

D5 change to 3mm red led (the power LED that we take out!)  In the D-Ultra mod we switch in another LED in series with D4

alright i'm no electronics expert but how can i wire a switch to alter the values of C11 R13 ect

i think i'm starting to figure this out....these mods are IN ADDITION to the SEM... that would make sense

and the switch part, all that does is "add in" another LED in series with D4 i'm pretty sure i got it now could someone just please explain how i would wire up this switch to turn the LED in series with D4 on or off?

thanks sorry for all the questions i'm just new to this whole pedal modding process  ;D

use a dpdt switch.  where the diode was (in) run a wire to the middle lug of the switch, then run another wire to the other hole where the diode was connected, and that wire also .  You have 4 lugs still free, so you can attach the diodes (observe polarity) to switch between the different sounds.  the top 2 lugs, attach one diode between them, and then the same for the bottom two.  this gives you two different tones

this diagram gives you a look at the poles.

                    I    I  (diode here)
from board    I    I   to board
                    I    I  (diode here)
Try a little tenderness.

Screaming Solo

ohhhh alright i think i got it now

thanks alot man i cant wait to get this project started

there's only one oither part that confuses me....what does this last part mean

Add 47pf cap across clipping diodes, see second picture little green dot in the center

i guess there's no spot for this so you kind of have to add it in yourself which diodes are considered to be the "clipping diodes"

also when replacing parts like doing this mod do you guys just usually leave the pots connected and you don't actually take the whole board out of the casing?

Here's my mod:

C1, C10, C11 ---- .047uf
C2 ----------------- .68uf
C3, C5 ------------ .068uF
C4 ----------------- 470pf Silver Mica
C7 ----------------- 220pf Silver Mica
C8, C14 ----------- 1uf
C9 ----------------- .47uf
C12, C13 --------- .1uf

D5 LED ( mounted on the front like the SEM )

R13 ---------------- 2K4
R39 ---------------- 20K
R16 ---------------- 4k7

I also used a 47pf Silver Mica cap across the clipping diodes ...

This is different than Keeley's, less bassy and more mids.

The clipping diodes are in parallel and would be D4 and D5 you want to solder it on the solder side of the board.

Leave the pots connected ...
