Hey !

I recently bought some matched pairs of 187K/188K gremaniums with heat sinks from a guy on Ebay in Germany for cheap.  I was going to try the 187K in the Little Devil Fuzz but don't know what to do with the 188K.  Any suggestions ?  I'm very new to this but have found myself getting smarter fast just reading the archives, there's years of quality reading in there !  I'd do a search now but the archives aren't accessable right now.

Thanks
Chris

has an interesting collection of Ge data and notes. Also a pic of a transistor gain tester that (I think) works by amplifying a test tone, so that you can get a gain figure without worrying about leakage. Suprised nobody here has built one yet (unless i missed it!).

This is interesting (concerning the red-dot):
"Also available, genuine brand-new unused late Fifties "Red Spot" germanium transistors.  At the time the price of a full-spec transistor was well beyond the pocket of the home constructor.  However manufacturers' seconds were made available at reasonable prices; commonly around 2/- each (more than £10 in today's money!!).  These were unmarked except for a coloured spot denoting the collector.  The colour indicated the device's intended use: red for AF and white for RF.  I've got a small stock of these venerable devices (red spot pnp), and you can have a whole TEN for £2 plus 50p post.  Each will be tested for functionality but bear in mind these are seconds, and may be noisy or a bit low on gain."

Well I just re-read that quote --I thought he was saying all the red-dot germaniums were seconds.  :icon_redface:

Never mind ;-).

Paul,

Thanks for the link, I learned everything I needed to know about my new transistors.  Thanks !
