questions about front panel design for pedal and rack

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a software different from "Front panel Express LCC" which can allow to create any pedal and rack unit "front panel".  I'm trying to create my own design with Gimp and Paint.NET freeware. For pedal, I don't have any problemes. But for rack unit, I don't find the information that I need to create a good front panel. I don't understand how long is the main side and what are the dimensions of the "useful" side. The front side is larger than the body of the rack, the controls have to be placed in the usefull zone of the main side... but what are those this dimensions... I'm still confusing...

Well another questions.. If someone can explain how to create circle graduation or circle scale around pot, I will be very thankfull.

Let me known which software you used for make front panel design, and I will try to them and decide which is the most usefull for me.
