I've read that Hendrix had used the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz on Axis:Bold As Love album, I'm not sure if that's true or not though.  I've got all the parts needed to build myself one, is it any good?  What are your opinions on this Fuzz?

Here's a link to the schematic:

Some find it especially great pummeling the amp that's breaking up a little anyway.
I like it to be able to do an 'about face', to a FF also

I am one of those.
It is a great fuzz all around. It is pretty bright and keeps a nice tight low end at high volumes.
In my experience with Mayer's circuits, they all seem to work well at high volume. His circuits are hard to clone perfectly because he seems to really carefully select his components. I have 2 friends that pretty much only play Mayer's Rocket series effects. I have AB'ed my carefully built clones to their originals, and they have their differences for sure. I should also mention that my attempts at Mayer clones are my favorite pedals that I own.

BTW,
The 2k fuzz pot is important if you are going for a close sounding clone.

Here are some pics of the 1st Axis Fuzz I built a couple years ago in a spacey enclosure [hot-plate]. Look how long those wires are :icon_redface:

i have one also and it is a very good fuzz that requires you to use your volume knob for the best sound.

cleans up very well but a bit bright. run into a breaking up amp or ts style pedal sounds best..roll back vol for od,roll even more for bright clean. also has a hint of octave going on.

where's brian wenz? he tweaked this one a lot if i remember?

tweaking may be required to get it running right, do a search and youll see what im talking about

Hi.

I'd agree with that.  I built mine with a 2N3904 and 2N3906, and it has great tone.  You can ignore that 2k2 reverse log taper pot on the schematic and wire a linear pot in reverse (ie use lugs 2 and 3).

On my cleaner (Fender-like) Musicman amp, I've always prefered the RM axis over a fuzzface, but on my Marshall 18 watter, the fuzzface seems to sound better for some reason.  But they're both VERY good!

hello Hello !!
     Somebody mention my name??
Yeah, a couple of years ago I started messing with the Axis circuit and found it to be a REAL good alternate to the Fuzz Face.
Hendrix did indeed use the Axis on  Band of Gypsies, Bold As Love, Isle of Wight and a bunch of other stuff.
How are you guys doing??  I've been busy doing guitar repairs  [also did music for a movie...]
Brian.
