thanks peter. the stupid resistor mistake was on my part, i substituted an 8.2k resistor for an 82k resistor, which happened to be in series with the sustain pot (which explains that problem).

it sounds great now, goes way over unity gain if i want it to, and distorts like crazy

  That misvalued resistor [82k for 8k2] would be similar to turning the sustain pot down some, but would not account for the misbiased transistors.

are the transistors going to pose any sort of threat? the pedal sounds fantastic now, the sustain pot and tone pot work like a charm now, and i can get that "buzzsaw" sound if i want to

i think the mis-biased transistors might have been a product of some poor soldering. i spent a while last night just cleaning up the soldering and that probably did the trick.

If the transistors are still screwed up, they sound pretty damn good

  Bias is relatively easy to check. It is a routine I use for determining if transistors are within thier operational bias voltage range.
