hi, i am about to make an order from small bear, and i want to get some extra parts so i can mess around with some other circuits and stuff without making another order(i have to ask to use my dad's credit card)
i am looking at buying some extra pots, what resistance/style(linear,audio,etc) is the most used in pedals?  any other suggestions on extra parts are welcome too!
thanks

RickL

10k, 50k and 100k. Maybe some 500k and 1M. Unless you have specific projects in mind I'd just get linear. They will work in all cases although in some circuits most of the effective change in the parameter will be all bunched up at one end of the pot.

Caps: 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 0.0022, 0.022, 0.22, 0.0047 and 0.047 (all uF) and 1, 10, 100, 2.2, 22 and 47 (uF) are all worth keeping in stock.

Diodes: Si, Ge and LED will all get regular use.

Mono and stereo jacks.

9 volt battery clips.

Dual op amps.

Stomp switches, whichever kind you're happiest with.

Also try the Search function. I'm pretty sure this topic has been brought up a number of times. Other folks have opinions that are every bit as valid as mine.  ;)

I'd pick up some 2n3904s and 2n5088s.  Two of my favorites and they work in almost everything.  You might also want to grab 1-2 enclosures so if anything works out well you can box them up properly.  Maybe a unibit also.

My next order (from wherever) is going to have:

~10 x 2n3904
~5 x 2n5088
2 x lm386
1 x lm3886TF
2 x lm383
6 x mono 1/4 jack
6 x stereo 1/4 jack
4 x 100k audio pots
4 x 100k linear pots
4 x 10k linear pots

Maybe some other stuff too.

ok, thanks for providing so much detail!

is there any specific size/resistance/whatever for the diodes and dual op amps i should get?
sorry, i am new to this(one completed pedal so far) so i am not yet accustom to things that most people would porbably already know

Since you're ordering from Steve just get what ever he's got. Some people say they can hear differences between different components and in some cases the exact part is required but mostly not. When you get to the point where you can hear subtle differences then worry about specific components, until then use what works.

TL072s are as good as anything for op amps, but they all have the same pinout and they will all work in most circuits. If you're planning on building a TS-9 or variant you might want to get some JRC4558s (the one most people think sounds best) but again, the circuit will work with any dual op amp. The only common circuits that come to mind that require a specific op amp are the Dr. Q and Bass Balls. If you're planning on building one of those, get the specified op amp.

Any Ge diode and any Si diode will work in most cases. I use unmarked Si diodes that I've scavenged from old circuit boards and I've never had problems.

I'll also second the  suggestion to get some NPN and PNP transistors. 2N3904 or 2N5088 (higher gain) will work fine for NPN, 2N3906 will do for PNP.

1n914 is a great diode to have around.

Since Aron keeps them around in good quantities, the higher gain 2N5089, and 2N5087s are great. If you decide you want to build anything on the Tim Escobedo site, you'll have to have J201s, which Aron also has as well as a good stock of 1N34 Ge diodes.

If you're thinking of a "FF" circuit add a couple of the 1kC reverse audio pots too !!  nice..
J201, MPF102 and some MPSA13's would be handy, also a couple of LDR/LED's

yeah, MPSA13s are actually a really solid tranny, I'm using a couple of them on my 5th Gear Overdrive.

i'd recommend some 1k pots to that list, Ive built about 3 rubys now, all with bassman mods, but only because I dont have any 1 k pots!

also the 1k are pretty popular in fuzz circuits, some people like the 1k reverse log pot for better control in fuzz pedals too.
Try a little tenderness.

wow i am getting a lot more feedback than i expected, thanks to all who posted.
could somebody please specify whether the MPF102 and MPSA13 are NPN or PNP? thanks

Joecool85

MPSA13 is NPN, MPF102 is a FET which I know very little about...
