500k reverse log

Im tryin to breadboard the DOD overdrive 250, and it says 500k reverse log. Can i use a regular 500k? Also, right below the IC there is a configuration im not sure how to breadboard it, is cap and resistor in parallel? How do I do that on breadboard?

On your breadboard there are paths (copper) that run up and down and ones that run side to side. Components in series are end to end like r1-c1. Components in parallel are side by side. So on your breadboard find the copper paths that run up and down and put your resistor and cap like this for parallel.

Both leads on both sides of each component should be in the same path or column that run up and down but a different set of holes for each. Basically don't put both components in same exact holes. I hope this clear if not maybe someone else can better explain. Well I hope this helps.

Hi Flib, if you use a normal 500k log, all the drive will be bunched up at the last tenth of a turn of the pot, and so is not as controllable as a reverse log.  I had the same issues when I built a Distortion+ and was amazed by the difference.
Sticking a tube into a tube screamer to get good sound is about like rubbing yourself all over the weight stacks at the gym to get stronger - R.G.

The "bunching up" is the sole outcome of using the "wrong" taper.  The actual functioning will not be affected.

Fortunately, this circumstance represents the very best situation for adjusting the taper by means of parallel resistors.  Take a look at the article on pots at GEOFEX and AMZ.  "The Secret Life of Pots" is a good starting point.  You will be able to come up with some sort of composite pot (i.e., pot plus one or more parallel resistors) that nails the taper you want.

Note that while parallel resistors will clearly reduce the effective resistance in some instances, all the interesting things in this particular application happen as the pot resistance gets smaller, not as it gets larger.
