potentiometer placement in circuit

just curious if anyone could give me some idea of how a person decides on a potentiometers placement in a circuit. in other words when designing a circuit how do say to yourself this is where this pot goes and this is where that one goes to control x and y. any and all information is greatly appreciated. i'm trying to wrap my head around all this stuff slowly but surely. thanks.
