I thought that I had bought veroboard from Maplins early last year, when in fact I had selected plain board with holes. Of course I no longer have the receipt, so I doubt if the pea brains will change it,  so maybe this self adhesive aluminium tape could be cut into strips and stuck to one side of the holed board. But it would only be worth the effort if it will take solder. Any thoughts?

Yep, been there, tried that. It's like oil and water!

Plain board with holes is easy to work with. Just run a piece of wire along where you wish there was a track & solder to that. Some people actually prefer to work like that.
