I always thought wiring the emitter straight to ground would burn up the transistor ;)

I dunno.  I've done it before, a ton of times.  Thats how I designed my 5th Gear OD to start with.  I played that for 3-4 hours no problem.  Then I changed it though.  Bazz fuss also goes straight to ground.  I'm sure there are others.

yes I built the bazz fuss last week and the emitter went straight to ground.

I've noticed that my build has a fairly heavy gating effect, which is fast becomming annoying. Is this just part of the effect or is there a way to reduce it/get rid of it?

This may be one of the simplest circuits, but it's also one of my very favorites. I never had the first problem with noise in this circuit, let alone frying pan sizzle. I have to believe you have a wrong value in there somewhere, especially if your circuit is gating. The biasing for this circuit is some sort of miracle of design, because you can almost put in any NPN, and it'll work. Mine never was noisy even without being in an enclosure. I believe I ended up using an OC144 germanium in that circuit, but it sounds great with the silicon. I was getting more of the "Aqua Lung" tone with the germanium, so I settled on it.

I sit corrected!   :icon_redface:

nonetheless I'm sure to revisit the easy drive.  I like the way really simple circuits sound.  I might be imagining it or something, but they have a certain 'nakedness' to them. :D
