Tape Echo Enclosure size / splice tape

I've been reading alot of posts and other articles on the web about tape echos. I also have been collecting what I believe to be all the parts I'll need for the project. I do have 2 questions though:

1. Has anyone been able to fit a DIY tape echo in a stompbox enclosure? - A bigger one perhaps? I'll need parts scavenged from a cassette player, another playback head, DIY preamp, and a way to turn this thing on (get the motor spinning) with a stompswitch. I'm also thinking about a PWM controller to control the motor speed. Either that, or a voltage stave pot for the motor.

2. I have the blank tape needed for the loop. Any suggestions for the splice tape to connect the halves?

Too crazy of an idea?

Fulltone's been threatening to release the SSTE for over a year now.

When splicing tape, you should cut it diagonally rather than straight down.  This limits the pop sound that can be made as the tape passes over the heads with straight cuts.
