Just built distortion box but volume control does nothing?

Hi. Please excuse what might be a dozy question but I'm a total noob and this is only my second build.

I have just finished building a distortion box based on an obscure 70's design, It has VOLUME, TONE and GAIN.

It sounds really good but for some reason the Vol control has no effect. Full off, full on, no difference.

I've changed the pot once but the problem persists.

Anybody know how to troubleshoot this?

since you've changed the pot once, I'd suggest checking where the pots connect to the board and the output. Make sure nothing's crossed up, and also trace the circuit through and see if it makes sense that the leads to the pot should go where they are.

a schemo might help, too  ;)

most volume controls work by acting as voltage dividers. if it isn't connected to ground in some way, it often has very little effect on volume.

Let's see... no schematic, not even a name for the circuit. Well, I know just the place to start troubleshooting:

Many thanks for everyones help. The good news, I've got it working!!!

The problem was another faulty volume pot. (I think I damaged the pots by bending the tabs to make it easier to solder the wires on).

I will be posting a wiring diagram and pics of this distortion box as soon as I have sorted out my web space. It's a very simple build with very few components and sounds great.
