I have that schematic already. I was just trying to get the correct trim pot position.

Surely the trimpot just sets the noisefloor point when the circuit is at rest

Don't you think EH put a trimmer there so they can "trim" for the optimal value? (obviously different in each PCB)...

I'm more than a little curious as to why a single diode in the drawing is labelled as being D3/4/5/6/7 all at once.

I always figured that it was actually 5 diodes and whoever drew it by hand was just too lazy to draw them all. It makes sense that that several diodes in series might be used to limit the voltage driving the jfet.

I do that all the time to save space on schematics. If I have two of the same part in parallel I'll stack them on top of each other and make sure both designators are visible.

Maybe it's a "bridge rectifier" with a diode in the middle = 5 diodes(?)

It creates the voltage that "squeezes" the jfet changing its resistance.

Many compressors/noisegates have similar topologies.

 But should they be "non-binary" diodes, jollywell make sure that you use the correct pronoun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After re-re-re-looking at the schematic, D1 and D2 are the fullwave rectifier. The "other" diodes are probably diodes in series thru a resistor to gnd that forms a clamping circuit: x-number of diode voltage drops above gnd.  In other words, when the input signal rectification gets to the breakover V of the series diodes, it doesnt get any bigger.  OK?  ok
