this amp has been modded by voodoo amps and sounds like utter garbage! does any one know how i can get this thing in better/working order? because its pretty much completely unacceptable on all levels. high gain vs. low gain, its all TERRIBLY muddy and flabby. no bass or all bass, TERRIBLY MUDDY! i tried changing pre amp and power amp tubes, same crap. any help?

It's really hard to make a call with so little info...but, I'll try.

What speakers are you using? What guitar/pickups are you using? Was it flabby before the mod or just after? Did you like it before the mod? Is the flabby thing the only issue?

It's hard to interpret ""utter garbage" or "unacceptable on all levels".  :icon_confused:

Usually voodoo does excellent work -- I'd call them up and see if they could double check it for you, or if you are experienced at working with tube amps, work with the filters between gain stages to clean it up.

Hope that helps! :)

I heard a lot of good and a lot of bad about voodoo mods. Trace is a super cool guy but that doesn't mean a thing. If I were you I'd get a schematic of the JCM800 and see what's different. I'll bet it's just a few components/values changed.

For some ridiculous reason I inquired about a mod to my ENGL Powerball with Trace a long time ago. I had loads of PMs warning me against it. Since I already love the amp stock (Auditioned Bogners and Diesels before buying this awesome amp) I chose not to modify. It would have been Trace's first ENGL Powerball.

FYI I was just looking for a slight EQ type mod. Since hanging here I know I made the right decision.

I have a Voodoo modded 2205 and think it's the best amp I've ever played through. It did take a lot of dialing in, and I do use a Hot Plate with it to squash some of the wide dynamics. I did notice that some speakers sound so so through it. I use V30s in an oversized sealed cab.
