Would that give me +12 volt and -12 volt?  If not, can you show me how I could get that?

Hi.
If you split 12V, you will always get +/- 6V.
To get +/- 12V from 12V, you will need some sort of charge pump or switching circuit.  Converting from DC to AC, stepping up with a transformer, and converting back to DC is also an option.
The best solution will depend on how much current you want, and whether you want an elegant or cheap design.

I'm actually here looking for a cheap and easy design to do exactly the same thing... any confirmation on this doing what you need, Joe?

Cheapest and easiest is to get a cheap 18 or 24V  wall wart and use a circuit as per the schematic above.

You don't really need the 1R/0.1uF on the output of each voltage rail...  you can just put a 0.01uf ceramic on each side or even use nothing as a replacement for them.

Eh, for now I'm ditching the idea because I've decided on using a different chip for the project.  I'll come back to it though, I'm also going to be working on designing (eventually) some sort of automotive chipamp that will require this.
