I just noticed that Amazon has new softbound copies of the classic "Psychology of Music" by Carl Seashore for under $10. There are used copies for as little as $3.85.

This is an incredibly eye-opening book for understanding instruments, psychoacoustics and effects. I heavily recommend it to anyone who wants to know about music and why we hear it as we do.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I had an audio professor in school suggest this book and I never got around to buying it... I guess the price is right now! Thanks R.G.!

The journal "Psychology of Music" is partially available on-line: http://pom.sagepub.com/  and may be available in your local university library.

Then there is "Music Perception", which has less of a touchy-feely social aspect to it, and is more science-oriented: http://www.ucpress.edu/journals/mp/
I'm proud to say I know someone with a paper in the current issue (on infant perception of rhythm).  Doesn't seem that long ago that I was a summer student while she was doing her doctoral research playing tape loops to infants.
