Anyone want to offer opinions? Pros & Cons?

I realize that there are safety issues that must be addressed, that is a given. I'm looking more for potential problems with noise, etc.  :icon_cool:

EDIT: Power supply would be in a seperate enclosure.

Well I can see one problem right off the bat.

You can't see the tube from outside the pedal.

Isn't that why people build tube gear?  ;)

Hmm... that's a hard one. On a wah, all you really see is the foot paddle!  :icon_lol:

You can drill "cooling" holes in that section of the treadle and in the enclosure. Or maybe a plexiglass window? Definately gotta see it and make it glow bright. It'll be magic!

ps. Paul, you are a stompbox superhero! :icon_cool:

This darn external power supply just makes things so bulky. Oh well. I guess what I'll do is make something on a 1/4" plywood platform. It's going to end up being a s big as one of those Morley wah pedals! Eek!

Paul - did you think of using another "stompbox" with no knobs and no switches, just a stompish looking box to hold the power supply?

It's a relatively human-acceptable method.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Yes! I seem to keep gravitating towards that idea. I am just trying to think of a way to make it a self-contained unit (of sorts), but I don't think it is really possible. I was also thinking of an externally mounted transformer, but I have a feeling it will give me headaches with induced hum via the inductor.  :icon_sad:

The "big bulky" power supply is a non issue if you use the small toroidal transformer like the one used for the tube pedal at Hoffman Amps; 40mm square by 18mm high.

But a big +1 on using a second enclosure.  But why not just stick all the guts in a second enclosure and using the pedal just as a controller? Then you'll have all the space you need.
Passive sucks.

Yeah, that would be the easiest thing to do, huh? Just a stereo cord to connect the two together. Hmm....  :icon_idea:

OK, the more that I think about it, the more sense it makes to use the wah shell only for an expression pedal and placing the rest in a seperate enclosure. The challenge there would be avoiding hum with the inductor being so close to the transformer, but I think a toriodal transformer and possibly a little bit of shielding would do the trick.

Back to the drawing board... or should I say CAD screen?!  :icon_lol:
