Since we buy large numbers of desktop machines (I work in government), there are often speaker sets thrown in as part of the corporate package, hence lots of unused units sitting around or tossed out.  I haven't found a single one whose circuit diverged much from the datasheet circuit for the respective power-amp chip (e.g., TEA2025, TDA1517) or control-preamp (LM1036) chip.

I've just built an amplifier using the TDA1517 and the Philips schematic to use as a stereo amplifier for a satellite receiver. I built it on stripboard and it is more than loud enough. I thought I would be able to adjust the volume on the satellite box, but it's actually still too loud.

I'd appreciate advice on adding a volume control. From what I've seen, I would need to add the volume control between the amplifier and the satellite audio outputs. These are rated at 2Vrms, 300 - 1000 Ohms. If I wire in a dual log pot, what kind of resistance should the pot be? I think the live output would go to pin 1 on the pot and pin three would be connected to the grounds on the amp and receiver, with the wiper going to the amplifier input.

I really enjoy building electronic projects, but I don't really understand more than the very basic principles, so any help would be appreciated.
