I was just wondering if I connect a .01uf cap and a .047uf cap in prallel will that make the value .015uf. If not how caould I make one here at home so I wouldn't have to order just one cap from a big company. Thanks

I assume you meant a .01uF plus a .0047uF.

Yes, you can put whatever caps you like in parallal to add their values together.  :icon_biggrin:

If you only have caps that are too large, you can use a bit of math and combine them in series to get the desired value.
This goes for resistors in parallel, too.

jxoco

for two resistors in parallel or two capacitors in series you can use;

X1 * X2
________ = target value
X1 + X2

remember that the target value will always be smaller than the smallest of the pair.

Or to solve for the one you need as the second value when you know the first value and the target value;

X1 * target
__________ = value to find to double up with.
x1 - target

And I hope to hell I'm right about these cause I've been using them for years.

Thanks guys. Al this info really cleared up alot of questions I had since I started this hobby. I've been bitten by the DIY bug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_twisted:

One thing worth mentioning is that polarized caps don't behave the same in the series combinations. They do however work the same in parallel combinations.

They're correct. I just did the math :)...*gasp* algebra DOES apply to my daily life! NO!!!!! my math teacher was RIGHT!!!!!!!
