Just thought that you'd find this one interesting ...
SSL's ( Solid State Logic ) series 9000 recording desk is one of the most
used desks for serious studio recordings in the world ( well SSL's in general are everywhere )
They cost somewhere around $750,000.00 ..... and have a much respected preamp stage.

The "pre-amp" sections for all the channels, contain 5 NE5534AN's running at +/- 18 volts
along with two TL052's ? (  oh, and a bunch of caps and resistors too !  )

No tranformer balanced input ..... no hi quality Jfet ........ but  opamps !!  :D

Well ....... I was surprized to read this !

Maybe they are just too good for us "9v pedal bashers"  :D

there were times, when NE5532 /-34 were the top notch audio opamps.

Well they have fairly good specs and at +/-18v I bet they perform very well indeed.
You dont have to worry about "9v battery drain" in this situation eh !!

The NE5534/2 were designed as specialized opamps for audio.  :icon_wink:

I can remember a time when the NE5532/4, the HA2625/45 and the LM318/AD518 were generally considered the only decent alternatives to discretes in pro audio design - even thirty years later, they still work pretty well. That SSL desk design probably dates that far back, anyhow. Hey, if it ain't broke...

they are still exelent by most standards and therefor still used in many proaudio applications..the only drawback..for us Hi-Z gyus that is..is the high bias current requirement..they usually dont like to see much more than 10k between the +in and and ground/bias, or they might start to oscillate..but that is not really a problem if you are aware of it..

The very first SSL Series (series B I believe)  Used a jensen transformer input on every mic pre.  I think the NE5534 is an integral component to they're signature "just-good-enough-to-tolerate-the-price-but-look-at-all-the-cool-gadjets-sound."

It's hard to beat the NE5532/5534 for a good all around audio opamp.  :icon_cool:
