O

nail polish remover IS acetone and lighter fluid works just as good...

rhcpmk

but nail polish remover has other stuff in it too.. will that be okay?

bancika

yeah, it usually has some oils, so I wouldn't use that...alcohol is ok

I mostly use nail polish, it seems to be working just fine, the oils ain't bothering me.

If what you're doing is prepping for paint, alcohol should be fine. Try the 99% rather than the 70%.

some nail polish remover is "acetone free". but if it isn't it's almost 90% acetone.

go to pep boys or advanced auto parts or napa or whatever and get an aerosol can of brake parts cleaner, about $2..  The shit is NAST-EH, will suck the chome off a 54 Studebaker (well, maybe not), and leaves no residue.  I think it's illegal in California, so you know it's good.  Eats the cheap walmart paint no-prob.  Don't let your cat get ahold of it.

Works great for taking laser toner off of PC boards, too.

You probably already know this, but if you use acetone keep it away from anything plastic. It tends to melt plastic or at least cause surface damage.

As usual, don't ask me how I know this  ::)

I'd go with acetone. IIRC,  I once tried ethanol (100%, for analysis which is very pure) and it produced dead stains on polished aluminium. But maybe compare to be sure. Acetone I know for sure does not stain aluminium.
