Hi!
Well, having succesfully debugged my silicon fuzz (thanks to some of you guys :icon_biggrin:) I gladly went on to my 1969 boutique fuzz. Built on stripboard using the layout in the Dragonfly gallery.

I was suspicious of the soldering so I looked the joints over and redid some of them.
Funny thing: Volume works, bias works, contour works BUT IT WON´T FUZZ!

I get good volume and the bias and contour both seems to work (tone alters when twisted).
When I set the fuzz to max I get a pretty good clean boost. I have tried two different sets of transistors with the same result.

Also, the trimpot doesn´t seem to do anything. I read another post about there being something wrong eith the layout with the trimpot and a jumper.

I currently power it with a wall-wart.

Help, please!!

Incorrect resistor value?

Transistor pinout (they work with very small gains when you hook them in backwards).

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I´ve checked the resistors and they seem to be right. I have also tried the trannies put in both ways.
All I can say is that it felt like I hade them the right way in from the start. There was a little difference in sound. Putting the trannies in on way sounded more "wrong" if that makes any sense?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Jörgen

You can measure each resistor on a FF, in circuit I believe.
Voltage measurements might help, but since it's a 1 gain stage circuit, debugging it is mostly just a get it wired right affair.
I go dogmatic on FF's, measure each resistor, then set DMM to test for continuity where I want non continuity, test all grounds continuity, I always test for non-continuity between V+ and V_ before installing battery [so it don't get hot and burn up].
Basically testing every which way I can to find anything in my wiring that isn't shown on the schematic...and on every FF, it's one thing. Or the other, other...
I spent an hours debugging on a FF the other day, only to realize that I'd used a '2 lug potwiring' for the gainpot, and had been testing with the gainpot turned down...which of course messes with the bias.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

I built this version of the 1969 Fuzz http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=42400.msg307481#msg307481
which has positive ground.

It's currently my favorite effect pedal.  Sounds just like the Stooges.   ;D

Have you check which strips you cut on the strip board?

My 1969's not boxed up yet so if you post the voltages going to the transistors I can easily compare to mine.

Thanks guys!
The quest for fuzz goes on... ;)
