Nice little project in the June 06 edition of EPE mag.  Although the effect is only a diode clipper, it's a well thought out design, the accompanying blurb is well written and informative, plus the circuit includes a nice 3 band EQ...one that could be adapted to suit a spare inverter in a CMOS circuit even.

There's even a link to Geofex so that the reader can better understand bypass techniques.

Hats off to Peter Smith and EPE magazine...about time they published something music related!

I downloaded the schematic from

http://www.siliconchip.com.au/cms/A_30329/article.html

when it was free.

I guess from the picture that it is the same circuit. A TL072 with clipping diodes to gnd and a 3 band eq.

Yeah, that'll be it mac.  Most of the projects in EPE mag are bought from Silicon Chip these days.  The EQ is a nice little addition to a distortion though.

No kidding!
I built the Widgy Box from Silicon Chip Magazine (its ages old in that mag).
Wasn't a fan though. I wouldn't recommend it.
Silicon Chip used to produce some pretty damn good projects, like massively high powered amplifiers with insanely low THD, a Digital Reverb and Tremolo for guitar.
Nowadays the projects seem rather dull.

It's not so much the distortion but the EQ section I thought was worth a lookover.  Probably room for improvement, but it's a step in the right direction from the simple one knob passive top-cut/muff-type controls.

I remember it had an insane amount of power filtering with a full on capacitor array!  :D
