I thought I remember on his site about reading about how he uses regular pots with "screwdriver slotted" shafts.  I have purchased a bunch of these from Mouser.  Alpha makes them.  You could mount the pot through the circuitboard and secure the PCB so that the pots live right at that elevation in the enclosure.  That elevation would also be a convenient distance for the components on the board to stay safely fit below the top of the box.

I'll bet the circuit inside the Blackstone is about as generic as a glorified Fuzz Face.  The magic is within the "how much" and what frequencies to pre-emphasize, and de-emphasize and how much gain per stage.  Quite a challenge.  I would guess that the Blackstone was quite a task to perfect for tone and keep noise minimal.  It's hard to deal with that pesky 1/f noise thing characteristic of the MOSFET.
