Modding a Boss SD-1 to sound like a Fulltone FD-2?

I seem to remember somebody saying a Boss SD-1 could be made to sound like a Fulltone FD-2.  Any truth to that, and how excatly would you do it?

I had forgotten I gave that to them!  :lol:

If you go to http://www.indyguitarist.com/mods.htm you can scroll down and listen to a comparison with the mod vs. the fulldrive.

Take care,
Brian

Does it really sound that good? I modded mine a while back but now im still not satified.

Wampcat-very gnerous to give out the mods..I look forward to giving them a try. (if they really sound that good i think ill pay pal you cost for the mod. :)

Is there any text instructions with that mod? Im confused by the replacing of the Diodes- where the instructions say replace with germ and 2n4001... how are those alligned?

thanks!

Search or scroll down to -  What is series, what is parallel?

Thanks- but thats not really what Im asking... I guess I wasnt clear.
The text posted doesnt say which it should be Parallel or in series... it just says GE and 1n4001.
Should those be in P or S is really my question.

Thanks.

Back to back diodes...
 --->l---
 ---l<---
 or
 --->l--->l---
 ----l<---l<---
 Pick a 4001 and note the orientation, replace with a Ge...IIFC
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

It was at the link for http://www.guitarfaq.com/

Here's the exact mod in case any of you folks want to give it a try:
Chris Leuzinger (of Garth Brooks fame, nashville session cat) had the fulldrive 2 and a/b'd my sd-1 with it. He then said he liked it better than his fulldrive.

Anyway, here is the exact mod -- its very simple:
Location --------Mod value
C2 ---------------.022 uf
C3--------------- .1 uf
R6---------------- 2.2K resistor
C6 ----------------.022 uf
C10 --------------1 uf film

D4 ------------Germ. And 1n4001 series
D5 ------------1n4001
D6 ------------Germ. And 1n4001 series

Note: Germ implies 1n34a germanium diode.

Thanks,
Brian

I COMPLETLY missed the word series!!! My apologies!

Take care,

No apologies needed, I miss more than I get... Let us know how it works for you.

I love mine now.  I used a combination of the Indy and the Keeley on the same site and fiddled (ALOT) with diode combos and resistor values (slight increments) right now I have two Si Tranys and a Ge Trany in the clipping section.

Great output and cleans up really well.  THX Indy and Keeley, and several others I can't remember right now!  I am a constant tinckerer (new word) and spent over 4 hours with the back off this one, I should seal it for good for sanity sake, Serenity now!!!!!

I modded mine :) More bass with definition and higher notes sounds fatter without be muddy. I alredy liked the mod after change only the EQ part of the pedal. Changing the diodes is optional, I think. Both sound great. Thanks Brian!

Does anyone have a mod to make the SD-1 sound like a Fuzz Factory?

JUST KIDDING!!!

Alright mod idea, here are the mouser part numbers I gleaned from other Boss mod orders:

Indyguitarist SD1 to Fulldrive 2 mod

Location --------Mod value [mouser.com part numbers]
C2 ---------------.022 uf [5989-250V.022-F]
C3--------------- .1 uf Metal Film [5989-250V.1-F]
R6---------------- 2.2K resistor [271-2.2K-RC]
C6 ----------------.022 uf [5989-250V.022-F]
C10 --------------1 uf Metal Film [5989-250V1.0-F]

D4 ------------1n34a And 1n4001 in series
D5 ------------1n4001
D6 ------------1n34a And 1n4001 in series

1n34a = germanium diode = [526-1N34A]
1n4001 = [621-1N4001]

One question: If you buy a fairly current SD-1 and do this mod, will the patented SD-1 bleed-through problem exist? I searched this but didn't have the patience to find a clear answer.

YES, unfortunately. However, there is a VERY good fix for this, here is how to fix it:

Hi, I´m using 1n60 diodes instead 1n34a because I can´t find them where I live. Does it make a difference?
Will the use of different types of caps( eletrolitic, box, film) really make it sound better?
Thanks to everyone. :icon_razz: :icon_razz:

1n60's will work just fine, you probably won't notice a difference. More important than the type of cap (IMO) is the *tolerance* of the cap. Electrolytics are +/- 20%, where as many film caps are 1% - 10%.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi, me again! ::)
I can´t find the j201 transistor around here to do the bypass thing, is there any other that could fit in its place?
I heard about changing the R2 to 620k would make the bypass better. Would both mod affect the clean and distorted sound?
Is it possible to add more gain on this fullclone mod? ???
Thank you very much!!!!!!!!
:D
