Adding bottom end to Dist+

I built a Dist+ a while ago, using the GGG schematic. But I don't like it, it's much to "squeaky" in my opinion so I wonder if you guys have any suggestions on what to do to add a little (or a lot...) bottom to it?

I did include the optional capacitor C5 in order to avoid oscillation, but I don't think I used any of the other "optionals".

I think C4 would be what you want to change if you wanted to add more bass (in the same way if you were doing this to a tubescreamer: http://www.muzique.com/lab/fatt.htm )

The stock cap value results in full bass at minimum gain/distortion setting, and loses bass as the gain is increased, finally resulting in a 6db/octave rolloff starting around 720hz at full gain.  A .22uf value shold probably get you what you want.

Thanks! I'll try it as soon as I can

Another suggestion, try adding a .047uf cap between the diodes and ground.  You may need to go as high as .22uf or low as .01uf, but you can adjust the bass content.  This will clean up the bass a little bit since less will be clipping, but the highs will be unchanged.  It should also increase the output.  Balance it with the other cap changes and let us know what you think.   :icon_cool:

I second WGTP, great mod for diode clippers that limit bass as gain increases...

Here's a mod to try on the dist +.

I did replace C4 with a 0.22uF and it sounds much better, but the Dist+ is never going to be my favourite distortion device...

I didn't try any of the other mods on this one, mostly because I'm lazy  :-[
But maybe I'll do it some other time

Thanks for the tips!

standard passive tone control is a good idea on the dist+.

The circuit in the diagrahm with the 10K pot is a pretty cool way to do it.  I have been experimenting with that and by 1/2 or x2 the cap or resister, you can get a preset without using a pot, or switch resistors/caps.

Since the Dist + is reported to have low output, the 100K volume mod would probably be needed since this reduces output.   :icon_cool:
