You could stick a 1458 instead of the 4558. It's actually a double 741 in one package.

sounds like my bag,

and i thought about the 1458 it would definitely be easier.  but this is all hypothetical, i have too much crap to get done first.

The RC1458P was used in the first run of the TS-808 (about '78-'79), those TSs sound a bit softer w a little bit more gain and some EL34-Marshall like sizzle.

The LM/ua747 is a dual 741 and can be used too.

I used a TL082 in mine and I like it.  I wasn't sure when I used it and thought I would replace it later when I ordered the right one.  After playing with the pedal I found it sounds great just like it is.  Put a socket there and if you'd like to try some different chips you can.  Unless of course you decide to stick a single op amp chip in there which a 741 is.
