Does anybody know if  ultra bright red leds are  the same as standard led for clipping purposes? I saw you can buy them in Ebay for little money but I donĀ“t know if they work the same as standard leds.

I seem to save mine for indicator `LED' and use "standard" red/yellow/green as clippers, each having
slightly different forward voltage drop.
Ultra's IMO would "clip" sooner, as they require less current to get bright .... hope I'm not wrong there, but they
may be nice as a clipper "between" say a 1N4148 and a red LED, as far as crunch/volume increase goes.
Give it a try and report back ... could be great :D

Ultras high brightness red LEDs have a slighlty higher forward voltage drop than standard LEDs, typically stated as 2.2 or 2.3V at 20mA. On the other hand, a standard red LED is specified as 1.8V at 20mA. In practice on clippers you may end with a lower voltage than specified due to the reduced current.  In summary, ultras do have a different voltage than standard LEDs and may have a different sounding quality.
