Hey, more nooby questions!

It says on most (if not all) schematics and diagrams for stompboxes and pre-amps of all kinds that the circuit has a stereo jack at the beginning. I understand that the tip is the signal used, but why is there a grounding wire and a signal wire connected to the same section of the input? (assuming that the plug is mono) if you all get what i'm saying...

thanks if you do, thanks if you dont

Is that a plastic washing basket?

It's used to switch the battery on when you insert the plug.
The - side of the battery goes to the ring wich only connects to ground when a jackplug
is inserted in the effect. (the jacks sleeve connects ring and ground together)
It's supposed to sound that way.

Your post is a bit confusing but let me explain how the stereo input jack works...

The part of the jack that connects to the tip of the plug is the input signal. It carries the signal of the guitar to the effect.

The part of the jack that connects to the sleeve of the plug is usually connected to the negative battery lead (which completes the circuit when connected to the ground)

The ring part of the jack is usually connected to the ground of the circuit.

When a plug is inserted; the tip of the plug carries the guitar signal into the effect while the sleeve and ring parts of the jack connect the negative battery lead to ground, allowing the circuit to become complete and work.

:) It's ok, we all have to start somewhere.

I've been futzing around this forum for a few months now and I've got to say...Dang!  I totally get it now too.  LOL.  Never understood why the stereo jacks were used as inputs. Good question Cakeworks.

I guess it's true what my 8th grade English teacher said, "Ask, it's likely someone else has the same question and you'll be doing the both of you a favor."
