GGG TS808 clone sounds fuzzy?

I put in 3 1N4001 diodes for assymetrical clipping and I noticed it sounded more fuzz like than an overdrive so I put 2 1n4148 diodes and a jumper and it seemed to be more overdrive like. Why is this?

I now use a 1n914 and a 1n4001. I once used 1n4007's - which are huge - and had what seems to be the same issue.

I think what did this to me was that, with the higher forward voltage of the 1n400x diodes, instead of giving the TS a little more head room - what ends up happening is that the opamp hits the vcc rails on the output of the clipping stage when the input signal is really strong. That might be the same as what's happening with you.

The fix for me was to go with a 1n914 and a (single) 1n4001.

Thanks Mojotron for the feedback. Ill give that a try. :)
