Smokey Clone-mod for use with bass

I built a Smokey clone http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/snippets.html
which uses only a 386 IC and two 47 uf caps.  it sounds nice when i use it with my guitar, but it is housed in a heart shaped altoids tin. for this reason, i will probably give it to my girlfriend, who plays bass. 

i tried the amp with my bass and with pins 1 and 8 not connected, it sounded OK, but when i switched the gain for a connection between 1 and 8 it sounds extremely muddy. 

I looked in the Simple Mods section of Arons Stompbox Page, and it said to reduce the caps before the clipping or at the output.. since there is only the 386, is that the clipping stage?

also, has anyone ever messed with the cap values on this before and know what happens?
