I'm planning on doing the Keeley mod for my Boss DS1 distortion pedal

In the photos they use brown capacitors.  I ordered disk type and i'm hoping they will work.

anyways, i was just wondering what the best type of capacitor is to use in both polar and non polar situations.

(example:)
polar being a radial cap with the neg. marking and non polar being something like a disk cap

oh and another thing, how do you know what voltage to get when buying capacitors for a circuit?

on these 9V pedals is anything above 10V good?

You should use metal film caps. Panasonic V-series stacked metal film are perfect. Digi-Key sells them. Some other types will be too large to fit. You will be mainly replacing the polarized electrolytics with non-polarized metal films. Ceramic disc caps could introduce more noise and worse sound than what you already have. The really small value caps that are used are supposed to be silver-mica.

I'd try to go with 16V caps. If you ever use an unregulated power supply the circuit might actually see far more voltage than 9V. You might be fine with 10V caps, but it's better to not push your luck if possible.

thanks for the info

edit, I went though digikey and searched "stacked metal film capacitor", "Panasonic V-series stacked metal film", and "Panasonic V-series stacked metal film capacitor".

I only found what they call kits and they are about $50 ...

Does anyone have item #s for the caps used in the mod?

I also searched "silver-mica capacitor" with no results.

Panasonic ECQ-V series. They actually call them "stack" metal film, not "stacked" - sorry for leading you astray there.
