i had completed my russian big muff already 3 months ago, but there were so many other projects that i was eager to put together that it went on my "waiting for an enclosure"-shelf, which is densely populated at the moment (foxx TM, bad stone, polyphase to name a few).

so yesterday, i gave myself a push and boxed the russian muff in, and later that night i tried it out with my bassand...
...this thing seriously rocks for bass guitar ! i had already built another version 1 1/2 years ago with some mixed values (big 1µF coupling resistors between the stages , for instance), but this one has just the right sound. the tonestack has some serious low-end on the bass side, and with the gain all the way to minimum, it has just the right amount of grind even with output-heavy active basses.

i think this one will find a permanent place on my fx-board  :icon_biggrin:

i used the tonpad pcb layout and used 5088´s, and for the caps i mainly used the silver, small siemens type (the one with 7.5mm grid size).

I love my old russian for my bass; I only added a mid knob to make it more versatile and LOVE it even more.............

wow, analogmike, way cool ! so you´re in contact with the man himself  :icon_biggrin:
i´ve always wondered what he used to get the sound on

  • games without frontiers
  • white shadow

especially the distorted bass on "white shadow" is real killer. maybe it was the russian muff after all ? i have to try it out in combination with my old stingray 5er to see if it sounds alike (i retired it for my jazz bass; it´s still around, but doesn´t see much use nowadays).

Great Analogmike! and cool to see TonyLevin/Gabriel fans in this guitar world ;)!

Lonestar: remember to shave your hair and wear fake moustaches when you play, to get the exact sound! :icon_wink:

i have a real moustache  :icon_biggrin:
but my hair is as long as gabriel´s was at the time they did foxtrot ! (but i have no shaved stripe in the middle) !

LOL!!!

Yes I am a HUGE Genesis and Peter Gabriel fan, I saw him many times in the early 80s, his best tour was the one he did for the PLAYS LIVE album. Those shows were amazing. I am so lucky to be close to Woodstock NY where I often can go and hang out with Tony, Jerry Marotta, and Larry Fast who all play in Tony's new band along with Jesse Gress who I know from Jim Weider's band. Tony also plays in Jim's band quite often. Larry "Synergy" likes to talk about finding old electronics parts, his main job now is in electronics. He was THE MAN when it came to early synths and sequencing, samples, etc.

More pics!
