I want to build a p45 from Torchy's layout and have a couple of questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The only jfets I can get are  MPF106, MPF102 and 2N5484. Are any of these suitable? I've read that the MPF102s are similar to J201s, but that they are not the best for phasers. Also, can I use the TL072 in the p45 and also would this work in the jfet matcher?
I want to build this into an old dunlop highgain volume pedal so I can control the speed with the rocker.
Cheers

Anybody? I'm going to get parts this weekend. From all the searching I've done, I'm pretty confident these will work, but if anyone knows that one of the other fets I mentioned will be better for this application, please let me know.

If you can't get the recommended 2n5458's, I would try for 2n5457's........if that's not possible and you can only choose the ones from your list,  maybe 2n5484's or J201's? Make sure you get enough to cull out a matching pair, at least a dozen or more and use sockets to easily swap out. If it doesn't work out, you still order the recommended jfets through the mail. I think you could use the Tl072.... use sockets if in doubt.
I actually built from that same layout and found the it a bit weak for what I wanted, so I just went ahead built a real Uni-Vibe instead.

Well I got the parts yesterday and after hours of trial and error, succesfully built a phase 45 into a dunlop high gain shell. A friend wanted one so I got him to buy enough parts for 2, and I did his first. After building this into a dunlop case, I decided I'd build mine into an aluminium box so that'll come later. I ended up getting tl072s (which worked fine in the jfet matcher btw) and MPF106/2N5485s. It sounds great and I can't wait to build mine. Sounds VERY similar to my old script 45. Here's some pics of the build (still needs a little work)

Here is the board almost completely populated and before I found the misplaced components  :icon_confused:

After stuffing it all in (I only had blue wire left!)

Nice job.  I wish I would've used strip board on mine.  I used perf and I can tell you I would never build two on perf board.  I originally used MPF102's before I did the Uni-vibe mods and It sounded great as a phaser.  I have matched 5952's in it now after adding the Uni mods.  I'm thinking of removing the Uni mods and keeping the 5952's in it.  I liked the smooth phasing I was getting before I did the mods.  It'll have to wait though since I'm too busy job hunting right now.

Just wondering: how did you cut the hole for the slider switch on the side?

I removed most of the material with a drill and cleaned it up with a file. Never again though in one of these dunlop cases  :D
