Did it ever happen to you?

The fun part about forgetting what you've built, is reusing an enclosure with the name of another effect on it.  I kept asking myself why that small stone was distorting so badly, and not phasing at all  ::)

Post-it notes stuck inside the box work for me. In a different life, I recall pulling access panels off aircraft and seeing "notes" left by previous mechanics, usually explaining "unconventional" repairs.

Right, that's it, no more flying for me! :icon_eek:
Seriously though, for anyone building a bunch of the one thing, keeping a book of 'repairs' is good.... because the same old shit keeps happening (eg a PCB trace "to close" to a pot case).

well, just think of the unconventional fixes and workarounds that AREN'T documented that way    :-\

You make me remember of problems I knew I already had (at work for the job, or at home with my effects) but couldn't remember what was the cause and the solution.

Log books are good for that.

Where do you get that goop stuff? I could use some of that...For me I use sharpie too and I have a file with the schematic, layout, and build notes for all my builds.

i did a whole bunch of mods in my marshall amp, i also reversed a lot of those mods. now it sounds really good but i don't know anymore what's changed and what isn't.. i should have documented that :p

Fot that one, I used some Liquid Tape mixed with some 5 min Epoxy. And I can tell you that it works because I tried to soften it with a soldering iron to check the circuit. I had to throw it away... That's an impossible job.

I just decided to use another circuit to replace it.

I'm a bit confused though,
Why would you want to goop one of your builds?  :icon_confused:

You'll LOVE this :

There used to be a radio show in London, where they had a "true confessions" slot, people would phone in and
"confess" something, sort of get it off their chest and get some forgiveness !

So a pilot calls in ( retired ) from "British Midland" airline ......

One return flight from Greece, was delayed on the runway, big queue's etc , so they had a cigarette in the %^&*pit
( you could smoke on flights then ) whilst waiting for take off.
Their slot comes and off they go, the runway had a drop off to the sea at the end and they were full throttle and getting
very close to the end ....... still didn't "rotate" ( lift off ) and there's only a few hundred yards left !!

Just as they start to "drop" at the endof the runway, they lifted up, missing the sea by a few feet .

Much sweat / wiping of brows and swearing ensued, then the pilot looks down, to see the packet of cigarettes
"lodged" at the end of the throttle  !!!  stoping it from going all the way up  :icon_eek:

Needless to say, the radio station was "silent" for a few L O N G seconds  !!

Marty.

( sorry to go off topic, but you reminded me of that ... I did actually hear it on the radio show ! )

that is freaky. eghhhhh...

my younger brother (14) is a pilot, and he's told me many times that airplane regulations (small engine, anyways) might appear strict, but can be outright ignored in places.

Gilles C

I don't know about newbie builder, but when I did that to mine, it was a kind of test for the goop mix I tried.

I could use that in a guitar soon...

Your brother's right. The only real requirements have to do with commercial carriers. No requirement for %^&*pit voice recorders, among other things. My original comment was actually referring to mil aircraft.

Anyway, back to the topic. I'm curious about the effect that the goop has on heat dissapation. Or is that not an issue?  ???

At worst, I would say that it can make circuits more stable. But I wouldn't include the Led resistor.

The first circuit I encapsuled in epoxy like that is a 100ma current regulator to charge batteries. But I left the space each side of the regulator IC (I used a 7805) free of epoxy. I checked if it was getting too hot many times, but I never had any problem with it.
