why would you use an electrolytic capacitor in a circuit as opposed to a regular (ceramic etc.) capacitor. I'm still new to this and still trying to learn so forgive me if I sound ignorant.  :icon_redface: Many Thanks.

Hi Club,

Generally speaking, electrolytics come in higher uF values than ceramic, so you won't find a ceramic large enough.  Tantalum, etc. are more expensive, so I don't use them unless absolutely called for.   I use the non-polarized type wherever possible...you really aren't s'posed to use electrolytics for AC! Some people say different cap types also add or reduce hiss (noise) in a ckt...nothing I build is that critical, so I've never noticed much difference, but some might consider it worth doing.    Pretty much, I'm using 95% ceramic, 2.5% polyester from RS, and 2.5% electrolytic.
