when substituting parts, how close do you need to be to the original value? Ex. I need a 51K resistor, the closest I have is a 47K....will this be ok? Many thanks.

depends on the circuit, I would try it and see what your results are.  If you have a voltage reference on the scematic then you can check and see how far off you are.

Usually it's horseshoes and handgrenades, being close scores.  Hmm, maybe there's a song there.  But if you're making 3ghz pc mobo's then you're going to need the right components and play games with board traces.

I've built many circuits with "as close as" values and have not had any "operation" problems as yet !
I do sometimes go for "exact" values, so your 47k with a 3k3 or 4k7 in series would be good enough :D
