Hi There-

Im modding my CryBaby-GB95 oir whatever it. The newish one. And Ive managed to change the sound...but its not better persay. Its true bypass...thats for sure. But the resistors like the Q resistors, the midrange resistor, the gain and the input volume and the sweep cap and all that - whatever I do to them they only sound worse. I even fitted trim pots as variable resistors in the places and still failed to get the right combination.

Has anyone tried modding their crybaby and been sucessful..if you have can you tell me the values of the resistors and caps and what you changed them for. Does anyone know the Clyde Mcoy specs or have a schematic?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me out.

Cheers

I tried modding one in the same way, I gave up after not being able to get any better sounds out of it  :-\ I think it may have even sounded best in stock form

I ransacked the thing so now I just have an empty wah shell and the circuit board missing a bunch of parts that I salvaged off it. One day I'm going to make a brand new PCB for it and order a nice new inductor (which seems to be the "heart" of the wah pedal according to many people)

isnt it spelled per sé? correct me if im wrong.  ;D

what value trimpots did you use? a 100k trimpot in place of a 1k5 resistor or a 550k ohm resistor wont work correctly.

ive modded plenty of wahs, and been successful everytime! the clyde mccoy "specs" are no different from any good wah, just that the bass/gain resistor is 470, and the inductor isnt crappy by any means, the electrolytic is a 4 vs. 4.7 (most people cant tell the difference anyways) and alot of the components are "mismatched." but none the less, the values are more/less the same of a good wah.

change the resistors to the appropriate values (or your preference), and swap the inductor (modern fasels, halo copies, or AREA51's inductor, which by the way is extraordinary). if you find it needs more "oomph", swap the .01 sweep cap for something like .012, .015, or .022 for more lower register of the sweep.

describe what sound youre trying to achieve so we can point you in the right direction.

Hey!

Per Sey is err tthe British way of spelling. If I spell something wrong...its british OK?

The Pots I used matched the approx value so thats cool, I just coulnt get a good combination.

Well what it was stock was sortof unusable. The treble was to annoying and scratchy and the bass was too thin and it jumped between the two with no mids. So I tried modding the midrange and then It became all mids and no extreemes.  SO then I tried the Bass- and it just sounded bad and the sweep range went from bass to mid with no treble, so I tried increasing the cap and it just got worse and worse never solving problems. What I want from stock is smoother bass to mid transistion and a smoother sound at the top and a full sound at the bottom...if thats possible.

And thanks for replying :D

Cheers (british)

keep the bass resistor around 500, mines at 570, and up the sweep cap to about .015. if you have a 330 resistor and a .022 cap, i promise youll have a a whole heap of bass/less highs!

also, dont go too crazy on the mid resistor values, maybe you put in too extreme of a value.

keep in mind, it IS a wah, so its kind of just doing it job.

get yourself a new inductor, and go from there. i think youll find that with a new inductor, youll have a better chance of having a better sounding wah.

I think in some cases, there's not much room for improvement - depending on your tastes, of course. IME, altering the sweep cap size seems to yield the most results, and then probably the inductor - to a point.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW, the schematic at the "Technology of Wah Pedals" article is the Clyde McCoy schematic. The Clyde McCoys just used some parts from some specific manufacturers, the inductor being most of the "magic of the sound" and the biggest point of contention.

Hey guys

Thanks for the help...I realise that wah are meant to be scratchy at the top but this one didt sound like guitar more of chalkboard fingernail situation.

Im gunna try everything you guys have said...cheers
