Wah vocal mod

The GCB-95 has a 33K resistor parallel with the inductor. Some recommend changing to a 47K and others 68K. I read where some off the older Clydes used 100K. The only way I'm gonna know which one I'll like most is to try them. This may be a good place for a trim pot. But, staying with resistors for the moment, does this mod affect how dramatic the wah sound is with 33K being the most dramatic and 100K being the least?

Thanks for your help.

John Lyons

Unless I'm mistaken the 100K will be more vocal than the 33k. Basically the 100k will be a sharper peak and more of a quack to it...
Try this. Take a 100K linear pot. Connect one wire to the middle lug, one wire to an outside lug and connect the other ends of those wires to the two holes from the resistor. Now play around with the pot while using the wah. Then you can see what reistance does what.
When you find one you like just measure the two lugs you are using on the pot and that is the resistor value you need. Either that or use a trim pot as you mentioned

I've seen 82K resistors, too.

Ok here's what I ended up doing. I changed the voice resistor to 68K. I charged the 1.5K to 2.7K and increased the gain by changing the 470 to 270.

What can I say but wow! What a difference that made! The wah is much more pronounced now with the voice change. It sounds really, really mid thick now. The gain increase was substantial. Now, when playing my strat I get a very, very close Rush Limelight kind of tone even with my single coil strat. What a transformation? I love the way it sounds now. I could have three of these GCB-95's one left stock, one as I have it now, and one that has a bit less gain. Eventually, I'll probably take out the 270 and try a 330 as it has a bit more gain now than I expected. But it sure sounds good.

Previously, it did a sound a bit thin...but not anymore. Talk about a tweak that will take a strat into LP territory...leave the wah in the bass-mid region where the highs are cut...If I wasn't me playing it there would be no way that I would guess that thick tone could come out of a strat.

I have one FAT WAH now baby!

Mods are fun... :icon_lol: :)
